Biography
Ernst Ottensamer, born on October 5, 1955, in Austria, was a clarinetist. He studied at the Bruckner-Konservatorium in Linz and later at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, completing his studies in 1979 under Peter Schmid. Ottensamer joined the Vienna State Opera orchestra in 1979 and became the principal clarinetist of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1983. He co-founded several musical ensembles, including the Vienna Wind Ensemble, Wiener Virtuosen, and Wiener Solisten Trio. Notable albums include Spohr: Concertos Pour Clarinette N° 1 & 3 / Pot-Pourri, Op. 80 (1994) and Weber: Concertos Pour Clarinette N° 1 & 2 (1990). Alongside his sons Daniel and Andreas, Ottensamer formed the clarinet ensemble The Clarinotts, releasing their debut album in 2009. Ivan Eröd composed a concerto for three clarinets for The Clarinotts, who premiered the piece with the Vienna Philharmonic in January 2016. Ottensamer passed away on July 22, 2017.
