Ernst Bier, born on January 12, 1951, in Barntrup, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, is a German jazz drummer. He studied at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern from 1976 to 1978 and continued his education through private studies with notable figures in New York City during the early 1980s. Bier's career began as a member of the group Just Friends (1977-1981), followed by collaborations with Paolo Radoni, Attila Zollerâs trio from 1980 to 1984, and Ted Curson in the Blue Note House Band. Since 1984, he has been a member of Perry Robinson's band, contributing to five albums. Bier moved to Köln in 1987 and then to Berlin in 1992, where he co-led a quartet with Mack Goldsbury and Ed Schuller. Notable releases from this period include At Night When You Go To Sleep (1996) and Next Move (2001).
