Biography
Erich Bachträgl was an Austrian jazz drummer and composer who was born in Frohnleiten, Steiermark, in 1944. He achieved early professional recognition in 1964 after winning an award as the best jazz soloist at the Wiener Jazzfestival and is famous for being the first modern Austrian jazz drummer with an academic education and for his membership in the ORF-Big Band. Bachträgl studied classical percussion at the Grazer Musikakademie and performed with the Erich Kleinschuster-Sextett between 1968 and 1970. He joined the ORF-Big Band in 1971 and collaborated with musicians including Fritz Pauer, Friedrich Gulda, Art Farmer, and Benny Bailey. Between 1981 and 1986, he led the ensemble Positive, which released the studio recording Gollum. Bachträgl served as a professor at the Musikhochschule Graz starting in 1985 and authored the textbook Modern Rhythm & Reading Script. He died in 2011.
