Biography

Emanuel Feuermann, born November 22, 1902 in Kolomyja, Galicia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Ukraine), was a celebrated cellist. His father, an amateur musician, was his first teacher. At age nine, Feuermann studied with Friedrich Buxbaum of the Vienna Philharmonic and later with Anton Walter at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In February 1914, he debuted playing Joseph Haydn's Cello Concerto in D major with the Vienna Philharmonic under Felix Weingartner. He taught at the Musikhochschule in Berlin from 1929 to 1933. After being dismissed by the Nazi regime due to his Jewish heritage, Feuermann moved to London and later to British Palestine before settling in the United States. He performed with notable musicians such as Jascha Heifetz and Arthur Rubinstein. Feuermann taught privately and at the Curtis Institute of Music until his death on May 25, 1942. Notable recordings include The Art of Emanuel Feuermann (1969).
