Biography

Elisa Gabbai, born Alisa Gabbai on December 31, 1933 in Tel Aviv, was an Israeli singer. She began her musical career with early successes in Israel where she released her first LP titled Shirim Shel Tel-Aviv Ha-Ketana, containing 17 local folk songs, in 1962. After moving to Switzerland for a nightclub engagement in 1965, she was discovered by a Berlin-based music publisher and soon signed under their label. In Germany, she achieved her first major success with the single "Winter In Canada" in 1966, which topped the charts. The following year, she released My World Of Songs, featuring songs in English, French, Spanish, and Hebrew. She also secured a second-place finish at the Deutsche Schlager-Festspiele 1966 with the song "Nur wenn du bei mir bist". Although she had several other singles, including "Vorbei sind die Tränen" and "Was bin ich ohne dich", her success in Germany was limited to these early hits. Her career included a notable cover of "This World Today’s A Mess" titled "Siehst du nicht, hörst du nicht auf", which appeared on the ZDF-Hitparade in 1973. After moving to New York City in 1978 with her family, Gabbai retired from the public eye. She spent her final years in Los Angeles and passed away on December 14, 2010.
