Biography

Double, originally known as Ping Pong, is a Swiss music duo formed in 1983 in Zürich by Kurt Maloo on guitar and vocals, and Felix Haug on drums and keyboards. Before forming Double, Maloo had been involved with various musical projects since the early 1970s, including the experimental band Troppo. In 1983, Maloo and Haug decided to form Double. Their first release was the EP Nanningo (1983), followed by the singles "Rangoon Moon" and "Woman of the World" in 1984. The duo gained international recognition with their debut album Blue (1985) and the hit single "The Captain of Her Heart" (1986), which reached Number 1 in Spain, number 8 in the UK, and number 16 in the US. In 1987, they released their second album Dou3le, featuring collaborations with Herb Alpert on trumpet and Michael Urbaniak on violin. The music video for "Devils Ball" (1987) won an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988. Double disbanded in the early 1990s, with Maloo pursuing a solo career and Haug composing film soundtracks. In 2004, Felix Haug passed away from a heart attack. Kurt Maloo later collaborated with Pit Baumgartner of De-Phazz to release Kurt Maloo vs Double – Loopy Avenue (2006), which included reworked versions of Double's hits and previously unreleased material.
