Donald Erb, born January 17, 1927 in Youngstown, Ohio, was an American composer known for his large orchestral works. He gained early recognition as a trumpet player for a local dance band and later served in the Navy during World War II. Following his military service, Erb continued his career as a jazz trumpeter and pursued higher education at Kent State University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. In 1964, he earned a Doctorate in Music from Indiana University Bloomington. Erb's notable works include Concerto for Brass and Orchestra and Ritual Observances. Throughout his career, he received significant recognition, including the 1992 Rome Prize and was composer-in-residence with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. He also held the position of Distinguished Professor of Composition at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Erb passed away on August 12, 2008 in Cleveland Heights, Ohio.
