Biography

Dorothea Hawkins, known professionally as Dodo Greene, was an American jazz vocalist born on January 18, 1924, in Buffalo, New York. She began her musical journey at a young age and gained early experience filling in as a vocalist for Cozy Cole's band. In 1959, Greene moved to New York City to perform with Cab Calloway's revue at the Winter Garden Theatre and recorded her debut album Ain't What You Do (1960) for Time Records. She signed with Blue Note Records in 1962, becoming the first female vocalist on that label, and released her second album My Hour of Need. Greene returned to Buffalo after her recording career and was inducted into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 1997. She continued performing into the early 2000s before passing away on July 21, 2006. Notable singles include "You Are My Sunshine / Little Things Mean A Lot" and "Lonesome Road".
