Biography
Hailing from Detroit, where they formed in 1996, the rap group D12 rose to fame alongside Eminem. An acronym for The Dirty Dozen (The Dirty Dozen), D12 at the time consisted of rappers Proof (DeShaun Dupree Holton), Bizarre (Rufus Arthur Johnson), Mr. Porter (aka Kon Artis, born Denaun Porter), Kuniva (Von Carlisle), Fuzz Scoota (Blake Karrington), Bugz (Karnail Paul Pitts), and Swifty McVay (Ondre Moore). Following the release of The Underground EP in 1997 and the death of Bugz, who was killed during a picnic on May 21, 1999, an acquaintance named Eminem (born Marshall Mathers, also known as Slim Shady) volunteered to replace him and, alongside Dr. Dre, produced the album Devils Night (2001), which immediately reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and was driven by the hits âShit on Youâ (No. 10 in the UK), âPurple Pillsâ (No. 19 in the U.S., No. 2 in the U.K.), and âFight Musicâ (No. 11 in the U.K.). Operating according to the schedule of its frontmanâwho was then on the rise and making the most of itâthe group returned in 2004 with the album D12 World (No. 1 in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, and Australia), featuring their biggest hit, the aptly titled âMy Bandâ, which reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 in the U.K., in addition to similar chart positions worldwide and a parody music video. However, following the release of the next single âHow Comeâ (No. 27 in the U.S. and No. 4 in the U.K.), their popularity proved short-lived with Proofâs death by gunshot during an altercation on April 11, 2006. After a four-year hiatus, D12 released the mixtape Return of the Dozen Vol. 1 (2008) without Eminem, followed by a second installment in 2011. Several tracks were subsequently released with a shifting group lineup, while the groupâs star rapper made a brief appearance on the mixtape Devilâs Night: Reloaded (2015). The solo careers of Swifty McVay and Bizarre have taken precedence over the groupâs survival, which Eminem announced had dissolved on the track âStepping Stoneâ from the album Kamikaze (2018). In addition to an Echo Award in Germany in 2002, D12 won the title of Best Rap Group at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2004. Revived by Kuniva and Swifty McVay, D12 reemerged in 2026 with the album D12 Forever (Vol. 1), featuring guest appearances by Xzibit, B-Real, Method Man, George Clinton, Tech N9ne, Ice-T, and Melanie Rutherford.
