Biography

Dieterich Buxtehude, born around 1637 probably in Helsingborg, was a Danish-German organist and composer of the Baroque period. He began his career as an organist at the Marienkirche in Helsingborg in 1657, later moving to the Marienkirche in Helsingør from 1660 to 1668. In 1668, Buxtehude succeeded Franz Tunder as the organist at St. Marien in Lübeck, where he also took on administrative duties and continued his father-in-law's series of Advent concerts known as Abendmusiken. These concerts, which included his own compositions, established him as a prominent composer and virtuoso organist. Buxtehude's works include numerous organ pieces, vocal music such as cantatas and oratorios, and chamber music. His most famous work is the oratorio "Membra Jesu nostri" (BuxWV 75). Notable figures like Johann Sebastian Bach traveled to Lübeck to study with him, although Bach did not pursue Buxtehude's position upon his death in 1707.
