Biography

Deux was a short-lived but influential K-Pop / hip-hop duo formed in South Korea in 1993. Founded by Kim Sung-jae and Lee Hyun Do while working as back up dancers for rapper Hyun Jin-young, the duo was one of the first bands to incorporate hip hop and new jack swing into popular music in their home country. After joining forces as Deux, they released their self-titled debut album in 1993, which featured the hit single “Turn Around and Look At Me.” The group’s live performances, TV appearances, and videos introduced South Korea to hip hop fashion and choreography. At the end of 1993, they released their second album, Deuxism, which was followed by Rhythm Light Beat Black (1994), Force Deux (1995) and the concert album Live 199507121617 (1995). Deux also achieved success with singles such as “We Are” (1994) and “Break Off the Yoke” (1995). After two successful years, Deux split up and each member pursued solo careers. On November 19, 1995, Kim Sung-jae released his solo debut album, As I Told You, but died of a suspicious drug overdose the following day. In memory of his former partner, Lee Hyun Do issued the compilation album Deux Forever in 1996.
