Biography

Dean Shostak, an American crystallophone-player and violinist, began performing at age 14 in Colonial Williamsburg. He earned a B.A. in Music from the University of Virginia and initially played the pocket violin and hurdy-gurdy. In 1991, Shostak became involved in the revival of the glass armonica, an instrument he would become one of only few players worldwide. His career took off with the release of his debut album Crystal Carols in 1994. Shostak's unique performances on glass instruments such as the glass violin and crystal handbells gained him recognition, featuring in notable programs like NPR's All Things Considered, BBC's Good Morning Television, and Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. He has also composed original scores for films commissioned by entities including the National Park Service and the Norfolk Botanical Garden.
