Biography

David Qualey was born on December 30, 1947, in Salem, Oregon. He began playing Hawaiian guitar at age nine and later taught himself electric guitar using recordings by Chet Atkins. From 1962 to 1965, he played in a school band that won the Battle of Bands competition at the California State Fair. In 1973, Qualey moved to Europe, settling in Weserbergland, Germany. His first LP, Only Guitar, was released by Stockfisch Records in 1974. Known for his fingerstyle technique, Qualey's compositions include "Santa Cruz" and a rendition of Bach’s "Jesu Joy Of Man's Desiring". In 1986, he contributed to the Grammy-nominated album A Winter's Solstice, which won a gold record. Notable albums include Blue House (1995) and One Way Home (2006). Qualey passed away on October 23, 2024, in Stipsdorf, Germany.
