Jean Gesner Henry, known as Coupé Cloué, was born on May 10, 1925, in Léogâne, Haiti. He started his music career as a guitarist in Port-au-Prince in 1951, influenced by Cuban music. In 1957, Henry formed Trio Crystal, later renamed Trio Select, which blended jazz, Haitian merengue, and folkloric rhythms. Their first album, Trio Select (1960), was released under that name. Henry gained popularity for his witty lyrics. They evolved into Ensemble Select in the 1970s and toured Africa in 1975. He produced over thirty albums, including Malingio (1986) and 25th anniversaire (1983). Henry died on January 29, 1998.
