Biography

Chrystabell – born Chrysta Bell Zucht in San Antonio, Texas on April 20, 1978 – is a singer best known for fronting swing band 8 ½ Souvenirs and for her work with film director David Lynch. She began her musical career as a child when she’d record songs at the recording studio owned by her stepfather, who was a writer and producer of advertising jingles. She turned her attention to acting, appearing in a 1997 kung fu film before moving to Austin, Texas to pursue a career as an actress. While living in Austin, she joined the local swing band 8 ½ Souvenirs. While with the band, she recorded two albums – Happy Feet (1998) and Twisted Desire (1999) – before deciding to move to Oakland, California in 2004. While still living in Austin, she had met director David Lynch and started a creative relationship with him. Once she moved to Oakland, that creative relationship intensified and led to her contributing music to the soundtrack to Lynch’s 2007 film Inland Empire. Chrystabell’s debut album, Bitter Pills and Delicacies, was recorded in 2010 but remained unreleased until 2021. However, she collaborated with David Lynch on her album This Train (2011), which was co-written and produced by the director. Their next collaboration was the 2016’s Somewhere in the Nowhere EP, which was followed by Chrystabell’s 2017 solo album We Dissolve. Although the album was not a collab with Lynch, they did work together that year on his revival of the Twin Peaks TV series where she was featured in an acting role. Chrystabell continued her solo career with Feels Like Love (2019) and Midnight Star (2022) before collaborating with David Lynch again on the album Cellophane Memories (2024)
