Biography
Wrongly considered a "one hit wonder" because of their 1970 international hit "Yellow River", Christie owes its name to its leader, singer and bassist Jeff Christie. Formed in Leeds in 1965, the band was completed by Vic Elmes (guitar) and Mike Blakley (drums) at the time of its greatest success. Christie's composition for The Tremeloes, but not chosen by the band because it was considered too pop, "Yellow River" catapulted Christie to the top of the charts in several countries, including the UK (#23 in the USA). Building on this strong start, the band followed up with another J. Christie original, "San Bernardino", with its sunshine pop feel, which reached No. 7 in the U.K. (No. 5 in Germany). These two tracks are included on the album Christie (1970), which is followed by For All Mankind (1971), featuring the track "Man of Many Faces " (no. 48). In the same year, the single "Iron Horse" reached No. 47 in the UK and Germany , Christie's last hit, although he continued to work with other musicians alongside Jeff Christie.
