Charles Chalmers, an American saxophonist and songwriter from Memphis, Tennessee, began his musical journey at South Side High School. By age 19, he had toured with Jerry Lee Lewis and worked extensively with Charlie Rich. His breakthrough came when Bill Black called him for a session, leading to collaborations with Willie Mitchell on "Soul Serenade" (1968). Chalmers contributed to Aretha Franklin's I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967), which won an Album of the Century award and arranged and sang backup on Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" (1972). He played sax on several Grammy Hall of Fame recordings, including Franklinâs "Respect" (1965), "Chain of Fools" (1967), and "Natural Woman" (1967). In 1967, he also released his own album, Sax & the Single Girl. Chalmers additionally co-wrote Conway Twitty's Number 1 hit "The Clown" (1982) and contributed to albums by Isaac Hayes.
