Rufus Thomas (1917-2001) created a few rhythm and blues standards ("Bear Cat", "Walking the Dog") before passing the baton to Carla Thomas (b. 1942), who, with her powerful voice, established herself as Aretha Franklin's rival and left behind a few '60s soul gems: "Cause I Love You", "Ghee Wiz" and the album King and Queen, a duet with Otis Redding.
