Caligula was an Australian electro-rock band from Sydney, formed in 1990. The group initially consisted of vocalist Ashley Rothschild, guitarist James McKinnon, drummer Dave Macken, keyboardist and backing singer Jamie Fonti, bassist Sean Fonti, along with founding members Dave Ross and Mitchell Foley. Their early releases included two EPs in 1990 and 1991, which were later compiled into the album Got One. Caligula's breakthrough came in 1994 with their debut studio album Rubenesque, which peaked at Number 13 on the ARIA album chart. The band received significant airplay on national radio stations Triple J and Triple M for their cover of "Tears Of A Clown" (originally by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles), reaching Number 24 in the Australian singles chart. Caligula toured extensively with prominent acts such as Depeche Mode, Pop Will Eat Itself, Ned's Atomic Dustbin, Ride, and Headless Chickens. However, the departure of Ashley Rothschild led to the band's demise. In 2017, Caligula reformed and began releasing new material in 2021.
