Biography

Richard Terfry, who performs as Buck 65, is a rap artist from Canada's Maritimes who has made a career with popular albums and appearances as a host on CBC Radio in his homeland. A promising baseball career ended with a shoulder injury but listening to hip-hop shows on the radio in his remote Nova Scotia home drew him toward the music business. He developed his own rap style and in 1990 he produced a single, 'The Rhyme Has to Be Good', which was played on college radio in the city of Halifax. He took the name DJ Critical for a while and used other stage names including Stinkin' Rich, under which he released a cassette tape of rap songs titled 'Chin Music' in 1993. Having settled on the name Buck 65, he released 'Weirdo Magnet' and 'Language Arts' in 1996 with 'Vertex' the following year. More singles followed along with television work and in 2001 came the album 'Man Overboard' followed by 'Synesthesia'. 'Talkin' Honky Blues', which included influences from country, folk and electronic, was named Alternative Album of the Year in Canada's 2004 Juno Awards and more albums followed including the experimental 'Secret House Against the World' in 2005 and a concept album, 'Situation', in 2007. He joined up with Belgium's Greetings from Tuskan to form Bike for Three! for an album titled 'More Heart Than Brains' in 2009 and two years later he released '20 Odd Years' to mark his 20th anniversary as a performer. Two Buck 65 albums came out in 2014: 'Neverlove' and 'Laundromat Boogie'.
