Biography

Bernhard Henrik Crusell, born on October 15, 1775, in Uusikaupunki, Finland, was a clarinetist and composer. Considered one of the most important Finnish-born classical composers, his early interest in music was sparked by hearing a shop assistant play the flute. At age eight, he moved to Perttula and began learning the clarinet from a member of the Nyland regimental band. In 1788, at thirteen, Crusell joined the Sveaborg military band as a volunteer. Crusell's career advanced when he moved to Stockholm in 1791, becoming principal clarinet with the Hovkapellet (Royal Court Orchestra) by 1793. He studied with notable musicians and performed extensively across Europe. His notable works include Introduction et Air suedois, for clarinet and orchestra, and Clarinet Concertos. Crusell remained with the Royal Court Orchestra until 1833 and died on July 28, 1838.
