Biography

Benno Moiseiwitsch was a Russian and British pianist born on February 22, 1890, in Odessa. He studied at the Odessa Music Academy and won the Anton Rubinstein Prize at age nine. After studying with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna, Moiseiwitsch debuted in Reading in 1908 and London in 1909. He toured internationally in the United States, Australia, India, and Japan. Moiseiwitsch settled in England and received British citizenship in 1937. He was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1946 for his musical services during the Second World War. Sergei Rachmaninoff referred to Moiseiwitsch as his spiritual heir. His discography included recordings of the Rachmaninoff piece “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini” and the Frédéric Chopin works “Ballade No. 4” and “Nocturne, Op. 62”. Much of his recorded output is available on CD. Moiseiwitsch died on April 9, 1963.
