Biography
Adriano Gonçalves, known professionally as Bana, was born on March 5, 1932, in Mindelo, Cape Verde. He began performing at the age of four and learned morna songs from Cape Verdean composer BeLeza during the 1950s. Bana recorded his first album in Dakar, Senegal, in 1962. He moved to Europe, releasing LPs such as Pensamento e segredo (1967) and Bana à Paris (1967). In Rotterdam, he formed the group Voz de Cabo Verde. Bana returned to Portugal, opening Restaurante Monte Cara in Lisbon and establishing Discos Monte Cara. He managed several artists, including Cesaria Evora. Notable albums include Gira Sol (1998) and Ao Vivo No Coliseu (1999). Bana was honored by Portuguese President Mário Soares and Cape Verdean Presidents Mascarenhas Monteiro and Jorge Carlos Fonseca. He died on July 13, 2013, in Loures, Portugal, at the age of 81.
