Biography

Baltimora was an Italo-disco music group originating in Milan, Italy, in 1984. Jimmy McShane, a singer and dancer from Northern Ireland, fronted the group. Baltimora was formed when Jimmy McShane met author Naimy Hackett and songwriter Maurizio Bassi and they decided to join forces to start a new musical project. After settling on the name Baltimora, the group recorded their first album Living in the Background in 1985, with songs written by Maurizio Bassi and Naimy Hackett. The album contains the group’s biggest hit, “Tarzan Boy,” which also went on to become one of the defining hits of the 1980s synth-pop scene. “Tarzan Boy” was also featured in a commercial for Listerine, increasing its profile. The song reached Number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The follow-up to “Tarzan Boy” was “Living in the Background,” the album’s title track, which hit Number 87 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Baltimora followed the album with Survivor in Love (1987), which featured singles such as “Key Key Karimba” and “Global Love.” Baltimora broke up following the release of Survivor in Love. However, “Tarzan Boy” garnered renewed popularity after being re-recorded in 1993 for the soundtrack to the film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III.
