Biography

Baha Men are a pop and dance band who were formed in New Providence in the Bahamas in 1977. Originally called High Voltage, the band began life playing disco and funk music in the clubs and hotels throughout the Bahamas and built up a substantial local following by releasing a series of self-funded cassettes. After coming to the attention of Atlantic records the band signed a deal and released their major label debut album 'Junkaroo' in 1992 which provided the band with a regional hit with the lead single 'Back to the Island'. Over the next few years the band struggled to make an impact on the international scene although they did enjoy a limited amount of success with Japanese audiences to the extent that their 1999 album '2 Zero 0-0' was initially a Japanese market-only release. Their big breakthrough came in 2000 with their single 'Who Let the Dogs Out'. The track began life as an Anslem Douglas song titled 'Doggie' until receiving a makeover from the Baha Men which saw it become a Grammy Award-winning international hit. The band have never repeated the success of 'Who Let the Dogs Out' but have maintained a presence on the music scene with their most recent album 'Ride With Me' released in 2015.
