Derek Coleman, known professionally as Baby DC, was born on Januaryâ¯7â¯1986 in Oakland, California, and emerged as a child rapper. He began rapping at age five and first appeared on Too Shortâs 1995 album Cocktails on the track "Thangs Change" alongside Illegal, followed by a solo cut "Can I Get Loose" on The Dangerous Crew's Don't Try This at Home. In 1998, at twelve, he signed with Too Shortâs label $hort Records and released his debut album School Dayz on Septemberâ¯29â¯1998; the single "Bounce, Rock, Skate, Roll" reached numberâ¯45 on the UK Singles Chart in Aprilâ¯1999. The album and single were issued on CD, cassette, digital download, and LP through $hort and Jive Records. Baby DCâs early career was marked by chart presence and collaborations with prominent Bay Area artists, establishing him as a notable figure in late 1990s rap before his subsequent withdrawal from the music scene.
