Biography
Armando José Fernandes, born Armando on July 26, 1906, in Lisbon, Portugal, was a pianist and composer known for his contributions to neoclassical music. He studied at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa and later trained under Nadia Boulanger in Paris. Initially a concert pianist, Fernandes focused more on composition and teaching. His works include a cello sonata, a violin concerto, and numerous piano pieces. From 1940, he taught at the Academia de Amadores de Música in Lisbon, and from 1953 to 1976 at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa. Fernandes received several awards, including the Moreira de Sá Prize for composition in 1944. His albums include Sonata A Tre - Quarteto Com Piano (1983) and Le Piano Portugais (1999). He passed away on May 3, 1983.
