Biography

Articolo 31, formed in Milan in 1990 by rapper J‑Ax and DJ Jad, emerged from the city’s underground scene, drawing on local hip‑hop influences and a playful reference to the Irish broadcasting law that inspired their name. Their breakthrough came with the vinyl release "Strade di città" in 1990, and the follow-up single "Nato Per Rappare", which established the duo as a force in Italian rap. The group followed with Messa di vespiri (1994), Così Com' è (1996), Nessuno (1998), and Xché Si! (1999), each album expanding their sonic palette and incorporating pop, funk, and international collaborations, notably with American legend Kurtis Blow on Xché Si! In 2000 the compilation Greatest Hits consolidated their early successes, while 2002’s Domani Smetto marked a stylistic shift toward ska, rock, and punk influences. The 2003 release Italiano Medio earned them the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Italian Act, and 2004’s live album La Riconquista Del Forum showcased a mature sound that resonated across Italy and neighboring countries. After a brief hiatus announced in 2006, the duo returned in 2022, re‑energizing their career and participating in the Sanremo Music Festival in 2023. Their 2024 studio effort, PROTOMARANZA, continued their tradition of socially conscious lyricism, reaffirming Articolo 31’s position as a pivotal act in Italian rap history.
