Biography

Andy Scherrer, born in 1946 in Brunnadern SG, was a Swiss jazz tenor and soprano saxophonist and pianist. He started playing violin at seven and taught himself saxophone by 15. After performing in disco bands, Scherrer studied classical saxophone at the Konservatorium in Basel under Ivan Roth. In 1972, he began working as a freelance musician with various groups, including the Slide Hampton - Joe Haider Orchester and Free Bop by Billy Brooks. He was also a member of the Vienna Art Orchestra from 1991 onwards. Scherrer collaborated with notable artists such as Gary Burton, Cedar Walton, and Dexter Gordon. His discography includes albums like Serenity — A Tribute to Joe Henderson (2004) and Welcome to Hippocampus Valley (2010). Scherrer also taught saxophone at the Swiss Jazz School in Bern until his death on November 25, 2019.
