Andrea Faye Gibson, born on August 13, 1975, in Calais, Maine, was an American poet and activist known for spoken word performances. After graduating from Saint Joseph's College of Maine in 1997, Gibson moved to Boulder, Colorado, where an open mic event at the Mercury Cafe inspired their poetic career. In 2005, they left teaching to pursue poetry full-time. Gibson released their first book, Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns (2008), followed by The Madness Vase, Pansy, Take Me with You, and Lord of the Butterflies (2018). Their albums included Yellowbird (2009), Flower Boy (2011), Truce (2013), and Hey, Galaxy (2018). Their work addressed gender norms, politics, social justice, and LGBTQ topics. Gibson was a four-time Denver Grand Slam Champion and the first person to win the Women of the World Poetry Slam in 2008. In September 2023, they were appointed Colorado's Poet Laureate. Gibson died on July 14, 2025, from ovarian cancer.
