Amparanoïa was a Spanish alternative Latino rock band formed in Madrid in 1996 by singer Amparo Sánchez, guitarist Robert Johnson, and Piluka. Initially performing under the name Los Amparos del Blues, the group changed its name to Amparanoïa in mid-1997 after Sánchez met Manu Chao in 1995. Its debut album, El Poder de MachÃn (1997), featured contributions from Chao. The group's subsequent albums included Feria furiosa (1999), which showed Cuban influences, and Somos viento (2002), a collaborative work with musicians from various countries including Cuba, Bulgaria, and Sweden. Amparanoïa, along with Chao and Fermin Muguruza, organized the Aguascalientes festival in November 2002 in Madrid, a three-day event featuring music and debates to support the Zapatista movement. Its other releases include the single "Don't Leave Me Now" (2004), recorded with the band Calexico, and the studio album La vida te da' (2006). The group received the BBC World Music Award for Best European Group in 2005. It disbanded in October 2008 following a farewell concert at the Palais des Congrès de Liège during the Alter-Echos festival, as Sánchez departed to pursue a solo career.
