Biography

Ãlvaro Leon Cassuto, also known as Ãlvaro Cassuto, born on November 17, 1938, in Porto, Portugal, was a conductor and composer. He studied orchestral conducting under Pedro de Freitas Branco in Lisbon and Herbert von Karajan in Berlin, earning a "Kapellmeister-Diplom" in Vienna. Cassuto directed various orchestras worldwide, including the University of California Orchestra from 1974 to 1979, and the Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1985. He also served as artistic director of the Opera SÃ£o Carlos in Lisbon from 1980 to 1981. He also directed the National Orchestra of New York City from 1981 to 1986. Cassuto's discography includes over fifty recordings, featuring works by Portuguese composers such as JoÃ£o Domingos Bomtempo and Joly Braga Santos, as well as international figures like Mozart and Beethoven.
