Biography

Alto Reed, born Thomas Neal Cartmell on May 16, 1948 inDetroit, Michigan, U.S., was an American saxophonist known for his long-time membership with Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band. After graduating from Lake Shore High School in 1966, Reed began his music career as a member of the Lansing-based band Ormandy before joining Bob Seger's band in 1972. He contributed to albums including Back In '72, Beautiful Loser, and Live Bullet. His most recognizable performances include the saxophone introduction to "Turn the Page" and the saxophone solo in "Old Time Rock and Roll." Reed also recorded soundtracks for Jeff Daniels' films, performed with various bands such as Foghat, Grand Funk Railroad, and Little Feat. In 2012, he was inducted into the Canadian Blues Hall of Fame. Reed died on December 30, 2020 at age 72 from colorectal cancer.
