Biography
Alonso Lobo de Borja was a Spanish Renaissance choirmaster of religious music born in Osuna, Spain, in 1555. He entered the Seville Cathedral choir as a child, receiving instruction from Francisco Guerrero, and later earned a degree from the University of Osuna. In 1591, he was appointed assistant maestro de capilla at Seville Cathedral, where he began composing liturgical works modeled on Guerreroâs style. In 1593, he accepted the position of maestro de capilla at Toledo Cathedral. After returning to Seville in 1601, he succeeded Guerrero as sole maestro de capilla until 1606, overseeing the publication of the Liber primus missarum in 1602, which reached Rome, Coimbra, and Mexico. Lobo died in Seville on April 5, 1617; his music continued to circulate posthumously, with the Credo romano adopted for regular liturgical use in 1648 and later recorded by ensembles such as Musica Ficta and the Tallis Scholars.
