Biography

Elżbieta Chojnacka, known professionally as Elisabeth Chojnacka, was born on September 10, 1939, in Warsaw, Poland, and was a harpsichordist. She began her musical journey by studying at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, graduating in 1962. Despite political restrictions, she moved to Paris and continued her studies with Belgian harpsichordist Aimée van de Wiele. Chojnacka gained international recognition for her harpsichord technique, particularly in contemporary repertoire. She released several albums, including Candide/Chaconne & Marche Militaire (1973) and Clavecin D'Aujourd'hui (1977). Her collaborations with composers like Iannis Xenakis, Henryk Górecki, and György Ligeti resulted in numerous original works dedicated to her. Chojnacka began teaching at the Mozarteum in Salzburg in 1995. Her contributions were honored with awards such as the Order of the Legion of Honour (1999) and Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis (2009). She passed away on May 28, 2017, in Paris.
