Biography

The Orchestre de la Société des concerts du Conservatoire was founded in 1828 by François-Antoine Habeneck, Luigi Cherubini, and Louis François Sosthènes de La Rochefoucauld. The orchestra emerged to maintain musical practice among students of the Conservatoire de Paris after public recitals ceased in 1815. Their first concert on March 9, 1828, featured works by Beethoven. In 1918, the orchestra toured the U.S. and made its first recording. Throughout the 19th and much of the 20th century, the ensemble played a central role in French musical life. Notable premieres include Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique (1830) and César Franck’s Symphony in D minor (1889). The orchestra made the first recording of Claude Debussy's "La mer", conducted by Piero Coppola in 1928. Due to financial difficulties, it was replaced by the Orchestre de Paris in 1967.
