Alan Shorter was an American free jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist who became a vital figure in the avant-garde movement. After switching from alto saxophone to trumpet, he performed early in his career with the Jackie Bland Band alongside his brother, Wayne Shorter. He is best known for his leadership on the influential albums Orgasm (1968) and Tes Esat (1971), which were later reissued in 2004 and 2005. A frequent collaborator with free jazz icons such as Archie Shepp and Marion Brown, Shorter also contributed to seminal recordings like Wayne Shorterâs The All Seeing Eye (1965). After spending much of the late 1960s performing in Europeâs avant-garde scene, he returned to the United States to continue his musical and pedagogical work until his passing in 1988.
