Biography
Led by bassist Louis Villery, African Music Machine was a New Orleans-based funk band that performed during the 1970s. Initially hired as the house band for local labels like Jewel and Paula, the group appeared on singles by Little Johnny Taylor, Roscoe Robinson, and Bobby Patterson during the decade's early years. They also recorded a handful of their own singles between 1972 and 1974, often embellishing their funk compositions with African, Caribbean, and Creole influences. The band broke up shortly thereafter. Songs like "Black Water Gold" and "The Dapp" became rare collectible items for funk fans during the decades that followed, before appearing together as part of the Black Water Gold compilation in 2000. Villery reformed the band one year later and released a self-titled album that showcased a vastly different lineup.
