509-E is a Brazilian hip-hop group from São Paulo, formed in 2000 by Dexter and Afro-X. Both members were born into poverty in Vila Calux, São Bernardo do Campo, and began their rap careers separately before forming 509-E. Their debut album Proverbs 13 was released in 2000 through labels Só Rap and Atração, featuring production by Mano Brown, Edi Rock, DJ Hum, and MV Bill. The group disbanded in 2003. A documentary titled Between Light and Shadow was released in 2009, examining their story and the violence in Brazil. In 2019, Dexter and Afro-X reunited for a series of concerts celebrating their 20-year partnership.
