The 2nd South Carolina String Band, a traditional music group from the United States of America, was formed in August 1989. The band initially consisted of Joe Ewers, Fred Ewers, John Frayler, Dave Gross, and Bob Beeman, who were enthusiasts playing various 19th-century instruments such as the banjo, bones, drum, violin, and tambourine. Their debut album Hard Road was released in August 1991. The group gained recognition for their authentic portrayal of music from the American Civil War era, which they performed using period-appropriate instruments. Throughout their career, they released notable albums including Southern Soldier (1997), In High Cotton (2002), and Lightning In A Jar (2008). Their music was featured in documentaries by Ken Burns and the film Gods and Generals. The band received the Stephen Collins Foster Award in November 2004 for their preservation of 19th-century American music. As of now, the group is retired.
